Think of your block as a new pet — it has needs for optimal growth. Place it in diffuse, indirect light, keep it comfortable and draft-free, and mist it daily. Everything you need is in the box!
You have received your Ready-To-Grow Golden Oyster kit from Mushroomnerds.ca! Think of your block as a new pet in that it has needs for optimal growth.
Your block will do best in a spot with diffuse light, the type of sunlight that a mushroom would get through the canopy of the trees in a forest. Either kitchen lights or indirect sunlight is perfect! A comfortable temperature without drafts is best. We have provided a humidity tent to help keep your Ready-To-Grow Kit happy.
Open your kit box and examine the golden oyster mushroom block for mycelium. Golden oyster mushroom mycelium is white and gradually turns pale yellow as it gets closer to maturity.
Mycelium is essentially the roots of the mushroom, and there should be some white growth throughout the block. If there is not much visible growth, let your kit rest for another week before proceeding to Step 2.
Remove the front panel of the Ready-To-Grow kit. Upon observing dense white growth, make a straight cut through the plastic bag at the front edge of the block as shown. This increase in fresh air will signal to the mycelium that it's time to grow mushrooms, just like in the wild when the mycelium begins to grow out of the bark of its host tree.
Unfold the provided humidity tent bag and roll up the bottom edge of the bag so it will keep its shape. Place the humidity tent over the mushroom block. Mist the block and tent daily. The optimal humidity is about 85–90%, so there should be a light condensation in the bag most of the time. Mist your kit daily, or even twice daily if it has been a dry or drafty day.
Wait and watch your mushrooms grow! Don't forget to mist the kit; it will grow very quickly when the conditions are right. Mushrooms should start to appear within 14–21 days. Keep growing and misting your mushroom; they should be ready to pick when the edge of the mushroom begins to quickly expand and become quite large (up to 10 cm across).
